Young Wants Lakers To Get Act Together

The ordinarily comical Nick ‘Swaggy P’ Young was sharply critical and disappointed with his Los Angeles Lakers team following a 103-91 loss to the (then) winless  Philadelphia 76ers.

“All I know is the circus came to town today and we did what we normally do,” said Young, referring to the increased media attention and arena demonstrations to honor Kobe Bryant following his retirement announcement.

The irony of Young, who is in a high-profile relationship with pop music artist Iggy Azalea, being concerned with distractions is that it was he who last season interrupted a post-game interview following a victory which ended up on Kobe Bryant’s Summer Jam screen on the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

But after a season of being publicly scolded by Byron Scott for lackadaisical play, it is now Young going on the offensive in the media.

“It can’t be like a video game & you’re playing with your favorite player, you know,” said Young after a Lakers’ 111-77 loss to the Golden State Warriors. “We’ve all got to share the ball.”

It is no secret that the Lakers attempted to trade Young this offseason and had no takers. Their relationship became rocky with Chicago Bulls forward Pau Gasol after seasons of failed trade attempts.

Time will tell if Young is developing into a veteran who is more of a vocal leader, or has grown weary playing under the lights of the greatest show on earth.

We’re a circus,” chided Young. “We’re playing terrible. We lost to Philly. Philly! What does that make us?”

Lakers Pick Up The Pieces: Roy Hibbert

XXIV, PAGE 24, Lakers

After being rejected by LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan, and Greg Monroe, the Los Angeles Lakers salvaged their summer of free-agency by trading for two-time All-Star Roy Hibbert.

Hibbert is by no means a franchise player like Aldridge, but does address a need on defense. In the 2014-2015 season, the Lakers were 29th in both defensive rating and opponents points per game. Hibbert is a 7’2 legitimate center that will provide instant rim protection..

The move allows the Lakers to keep their financial flexibility. Hibbert is 28 (younger than Aldridge) and in the final year of his contract, which should provide added incentive to play well.

In this edition of P.A.G.E. 24 we analyze why the Lakers haven’t been able to lure free-agents to Los Angeles the past few summers, and how Roy Hibbert can help their young core.

Versus: Kobe v LeBron – Who Had More Help?

As LeBron James enters his sixth NBA Finals competition, the comparisons and contrasts with his superstar peers are made. Kobe Bryant has 5 rings with the Los Angeles Lakers, but many analysts do not credit his first three (2000-2002) as being a part of his individual accomplishments. Still, LeBron clearly joined Dwyane Wade and Chirs Bosh in Miami because he grew weary of trying to win it on his own, and collected back-to-back titles with the Heat.

Here is a statistical breakdown of Kobe’s three trips to the NBA Finals (without Shaq) and LeBron’s first three trips to the Finals along with their supporting casts numbers.

Pau Gasol Off And Running With The Bulls

Pau Gasol did o.k. in his debut with the Chicago Bulls. He tallied 22 points and 11 rebounds in a victory over the New York Knicks.

No wonder Carmelo Anthony tried to get him to join the Bockers. Melo went 5-13 in his Triangle Offense debut, but his team suffered a 104-80 shellacking.

Contenders like the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs made desperate attempts to convince Gasol to sign for less money as the final piece of their championship puzzles. The Bulls were ultimately the team that impressed Gasol enough to accept a less lucrative contract than the Los Angeles Lakers offered.

With the return of Derrick Rose, along with Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson in the front-court, Pau Gasol may have again landed in the right place at the right time.

P.A.GE. 24 with Special Guest Eric Pincus of the L.A. Times

Lakers’ fans have dealt with frustrations over the past few seasons, and the Summer of 2014 represented a chance to reboot. But after failing to land marquee free agents, and a seemingly elongated coaching search, for some, that optimism has morphed into disappointment.

L.A. Times Sports and BasketballInsiders.com Senior Writer,Eric Pincus, gave RunTheTriangle.com an exclusive interview about the Lakers’ off-season moves.
